Why Is My AC Running But Not Cooling? Common Causes for Ohio Summers

It’s the middle of an Ohio summer, the thermostat is set to 70, and you can hear your air conditioner humming away outside. There’s just one problem: the air coming out of your vents isn’t cold. Or worse — it’s downright warm.

An AC that runs but doesn’t cool is one of the most common — and most frustrating — calls we get during a Cleveland heat wave. The good news is that the cause isn’t always serious. Some issues you can check yourself in a few minutes; others need a licensed technician. Either way, the longer a struggling system runs, the harder it works and the more it can cost you.

Start Here: Check Your Thermostat

Before you assume the worst, rule out the easiest fix. More often than you’d think, a “broken” AC is really just a thermostat issue.

  • Make sure it’s set to COOL — not “heat” or “fan only” — and that the target temperature is actually lower than the current room temperature.
  • Set the fan to AUTO, not ON. When the fan is set to ON, it blows air continuously even when the system isn’t actively cooling. That uncooled air can feel warm at the vents and make people think the AC has failed.
  • Replace the batteries. A thermostat with a weak battery can lose its connection to the system.

If your thermostat checks out and you’re still getting warm air, move on to the next most common culprit.

A Dirty or Clogged Air Filter

A clogged filter is one of the most common — and most preventable — causes of an AC that won’t cool.

This is the single most common cause we see, and it’s also the easiest to prevent. Your air filter traps dust, pet dander, and debris before they reach your system. When it clogs up, it chokes off airflow — and your AC can’t move enough air to cool your home properly.

A severely clogged filter doesn’t just hurt performance. It can cause your evaporator coil to freeze over (more on that next), which shuts down cooling entirely.

What to do: Check your filter. If it looks gray and dusty, replace it. During peak cooling season, plan to check it every 30 days and replace it every 1–3 months depending on the type and whether you have pets.

A Frozen Evaporator Coil

If you see ice on your indoor unit or on the refrigerant lines, your evaporator coil has frozen — and a frozen coil can’t absorb heat from your home’s air. The result is weak airflow and warm air at the vents, even while the system runs nonstop.

Frozen coils are usually caused by restricted airflow (often from that dirty filter) or by low refrigerant. Here’s the catch: while the coil is iced over, the system can’t be properly diagnosed.

What to do: Turn the system off at the thermostat and let the ice thaw completely — this can take several hours. Replace your air filter. If the coil freezes again after thawing, that points to a deeper issue like low refrigerant, and it’s time to call for air conditioning repair.

A Dirty or Blocked Outdoor Condenser Unit

Your outdoor unit (the condenser) is responsible for releasing the heat your system pulls out of your home. When its coils are caked with dirt, grass clippings, cottonwood, or leaves — or when shrubs and fencing crowd it — it can’t dump that heat efficiently. So your home never quite cools down.

This is especially common in Northeast Ohio yards in late spring and summer, when pollen, seeds, and lawn debris are everywhere.

What to do: Turn off power to the unit, gently clear away leaves and debris, and trim back any plants so there’s at least two feet of clearance on all sides. A deeper coil cleaning is part of every professional AC cleaning, check, and safety inspection.

Low Refrigerant or a Refrigerant Leak

Refrigerant is the substance that actually absorbs heat from your indoor air. If your system is low on refrigerant — almost always because of a leak — it simply can’t cool effectively, no matter how hard it runs. Warning signs include warm air from the vents, a hissing or bubbling sound, and ice on the refrigerant lines.

Here’s the important part: refrigerant doesn’t get “used up” like gas in a car. If your level is low, there’s a leak somewhere. Topping it off without finding and fixing the leak is a temporary band-aid — and by law, refrigerant must be handled by a licensed technician.

What to do: This one isn’t a DIY fix. If you suspect low refrigerant, shut the system off to prevent further damage and call a professional.

A Tripped Breaker or Electrical Problem

If your indoor fan is blowing but the outdoor unit is completely silent, the problem may be electrical. A central air system runs on two circuits, and it’s possible for the outdoor unit to lose power while the indoor blower keeps running — which is exactly why you’d feel air moving, but not cold air.

A failed capacitor, a tripped breaker, or a faulty contactor can all stop the outdoor unit from running.

What to do: Check your electrical panel. If the AC breaker has tripped, reset it once. If it trips again, stop — that’s a sign of a real electrical fault, and you should call a technician rather than risk damage or a safety hazard.

Leaky or Blocked Ductwork

Sometimes the system is cooling fine — the cold air just isn’t making it to your rooms. Leaky, disconnected, or blocked ducts (often in attics, crawl spaces, or basements) can let conditioned air escape before it ever reaches your vents. Leaky ductwork can cut your system’s efficiency by 20–30%.

Also check the simple stuff: make sure supply vents and return grilles aren’t blocked by furniture, rugs, or closed dampers.

What to do: Walk your home and confirm vents are open and unobstructed. If certain rooms are always warmer than others, have a technician inspect your duct system.

An Aging, Undersized, or Failing System

If your AC is more than 10–15 years old, struggles every summer, or short-cycles (turns on and off rapidly), the system itself may be the problem. An undersized unit will run constantly and never catch up on the hottest days, and a failing compressor — the heart of your AC — will run without producing cold air.

What You Can Check Yourself vs. When to Call a Pro

Safe to check on your own:

  • Thermostat settings (Cool mode, temperature, fan on Auto, fresh batteries)
  • Air filter — replace if dirty
  • Outdoor unit — clear debris and trim back plants
  • Vents and registers — make sure they’re open and unblocked
  • Breaker — reset once if tripped

Call a licensed technician for:

  • Low or leaking refrigerant
  • A coil that keeps freezing after thawing
  • An outdoor unit that won’t run, or a breaker that trips repeatedly
  • Suspected duct leaks or a failing compressor
  • Any burning smell, electrical smell, or repeated shutdowns
